Descriptions of training sessions to be selected in pre-sign up

Opening session [open to all]

This session will to introduce the concepts of knowledge sharing, knowledge management, ICTs, facilitation, social media, online collaboration and networking and more. This opening session will also be a time where participants are given guidance around identification, choosing and implementing the right tool for their particular stage of work and to help achieve a particular purpose or goal they may have. Very often we hear people shying away from the use of innovative tools and methods due to the “overwhelmingly long and constantly increasing list of tools and methods” from which to choose. Different tools and methods can and should be used for different kinds of activities and for achieving certain aims. This session aims to help people link the tools and methods they will explore and learn with real needs, activities and goals they may have. To start thinking about what tools and methods would fit with your stage of work, type of activities and goals and purposes- take a look at the knowledge sharing framework.

Parallel training sessions- offered in the morning and then again in the afternoon- please use description below to help you select your sessions to sign up for on the survey:

SOCIAL AND COLLABORATIVE (ONLINE) MEDIA POPULAR MEDIA FACE-TO-FACE KNOWLEDGE SHARING METHODS GOOGLE TOOLS
Learn how to blog:
A blog (a portmanteau of the term "web log") is a type of website or part of a website. Blogs are usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. In this session, participants will learn about blogs and why you should blog, how to search and find relevant blogs and how to create your blog.
Video production, storing and sharing:
Nowadays, almost anyone can record videos and publish them on their web sites. Creating such videos is increasingly easy - many mobile phones and cameras allow short video's to be made. Once saved and edited, these can be uploaded to the Internet and tagged, promoted, embedded in most web sites and included in feeds and podcasts. This session will focus on the basics of 'blipping', recording and sharing short videos online. It will combine presentations and examples of individuals and organsiations using videos, with guided ‘hands-on’ training through the process of recording, editing and uploading videos online.
[Note: Please bring your own digital camera and laptop if you have one. Also, please make sure the following programs are installed on your computer: Windows Movie Maker and Any Video Converter]
Variety of f2f KS methods:
The aim of this combined session is to share learning and experience between participants on ways to facilitate and energise knowledge sharing without using any digital technologies. We will open each session with a short Open Space to identify topics of interest and experiences to share Agenda
Focus on the Google geo products . Strong in visualizations, collaboration and data sharing and above all free . Google Earth - 3D and great tool for communication spatial information, Map Maker - No need to acquire data if you can easily map and download . Fusion tables : What a better way to interchangeably view tables and maps .
Collaborative writing:
Web2 tools specifically designed for use across multiple document authors can help you improve the way you collaboratively write documents. In this session we will introduce the concept of collaborative writing software, specifically Wikis and Google Docs, and we will give you some time to get your hands on these tools to help you get started in your next collaborative writing journey!
Radio/Audio:
Many scientists have a dream of communicating their discoveries in their own way on the radio, but they do not know how to record, edit and make it into a program. What simple participatory styles can one follow. This is the chance to all scientists and producers to learn and participate in a participatory radio production. You know it, record it and mix it yourself and let others broadcast it.
Google Communicate , Collaborate and Save for your organisation using the powerful and intuitive Google Applications such as Gmail , Google Docs and Google Calendar . Have a working view of Google voice and Google books
Academic social networking using Mendeley:
Mendeley is a (free) reference manager and academic social network that can help you organize your research, collaborate with others online, and discover the latest research. In this session, participants can expect to learn how to manage and share their research using Mendeley. They will learn how to create profiles and collaborate using private workspaces to manage group projects. By the end of the session, participants will know how to use Mendeley's desktop and web applications and understand some of its benefits including gaining 'cloud' access to their profiles and greater visibility for their research.
Making the most of the media:
This session will explore and provide insights into what the media expect from researchers, NGOs, and other groups and to help build partnerships between the two (i.e break down some of the barriers) and provide some tips for people for when they are approached by the press (radio or print or tv etc). After some sketches to start the session , some tips are introduced and then the participants will break into groups for sharing discussions on good/bad experiences with the media and leading into what can be done to make interactions more positive/build on them. Then people will break into smaller groups or pairs to discuss key messages for one topic which they would put forward for an interview/article etc. Using those key messages people (if time) will be asked to start drafting their own press release (just first two paras) which can then be shared and peer reviewed.

Closing session (open to all): During Day 0, many social media tools were introduced, enabling you to publish your work and to advocate your causes. However, often social media tools remain stagnant and isolated ‘repositories’. There is no real added value in having good content, if nobody knows about it. In this session, Peter introduces practical and low-effort tips, tools and tricks to make your content known to the wider public, to “make your content travel through the social media channels”, magnifying the reach of your content.
